The Agfa Wildlife and Environmental Awards is an annual photographic competition that enjoys international recognition. First held in 1981, the event now attracts entries from all over southern Africa, as well as from countries such as Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain and the USA. The categories into which the over 3,500 entries are categorised include General Wildlife, Birds, Marine, Landscape and Plants, Insects and Reptiles, and The Best Young Photographer. Here, courtesy of WildNet Africa, are the winners in each category for 1996. The exhibition of the Top Fifty photographs was be on display at venues throughout South Africa during the year following the awards. A second set travels the world to various embassies, trade shows and the like under the auspices of the South African Department of Foreign Affairs. A permanent exhibition is also set up each year by the National Parks Board of South Africa at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park.
